I have a confession. I don't love 'normal' maternity photography. I find it too wholesome and just a wee bit boring... But every year I try to challenge myself to branch out creatively and try something new, and this year I decided to take on Maternity.
When I conceptualized this series, I wasn't sure how I would get pregnant women on board with it. I wanted to shoot materntiy boudoir-style, but with a touch of mood and grit. This flies in the face of traditional maternity, and I wasn't entirely sure that a single person would 'get it', let alone want to pose for it.
I wanted to capture how strong and beautiful the pregnant body is, without over sexualizing it. I wanted other pregnant women to see themselves in these images, and to feel a tugging at their hearts and bellies.
No flower crowns. No long flowing gowns. Just raw, simple, beautiful beautiful bodies in all their glory. Powerful, emotive, gritty.
A big thank you to Columbia Garden's Winery Guesthouse for being the perfect setting to bring my vision to life. And, of course, an even bigger thank you to the incredible women who lent their time and their gorgeous bellies to this project. Thanks for believing in my artistry.
After shooting Maternity this way, I am not sure that I ever want to shoot it any other way again.
